Alternative technologies for the objective identification and quantitative analysis of cashmere and other fine animal hair are now being employed in various laboratories throughout the world.
DNA analysis is currently used for qualitative examination of animal fibers only.
Maldi-TOFMS (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization - Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry) and UPLC-MS (Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry, and further developments like Q-TOF) technologies use the mass spectrometer for protein analysis (proteomic) and have been proven reliable for qualitative and quantitative analysis. CCMI support the adoption of these objective methods.
